Abstract

This community service activity was conducted in the Gunung Nona area, Nusaniwe District, Ambon City, with the aim of improving the knowledge and skills of small-scale pig farmers through a participatory extension approach in environmental sanitation management. The extension and educational activities were carried out through interactive lectures, discussions, and direct demonstrations, emphasizing the importance of livestock housing hygiene, livestock waste management, vector control, and the application of proper sanitation practices.

The evaluation was conducted using a pre-test and post-test design with a Likert scale of 1–5. The results showed an increase in farmers’ awareness of the importance of environmental sanitation in maintaining animal and environmental health, as reflected in very good participation (90%), good knowledge (70%), and fairly good skills (65%), although constraints related to supporting facilities and infrastructure were still identified. The implementation of a simple record-keeping system also assisted farmers in routinely monitoring housing conditions and animal health. Overall, this activity was effective in enhancing the capacity of pig farmers through a participatory extension approach in environmental sanitation management, thereby supporting the development of healthy and sustainable livestock farming practices in Gunung Nona, Ambon City.
