Abstract

Orangutans in rehabilitation centers follow a feeding schedule determined by the center management. This influences both the types of feed provided and the feeding behavior of the orangutans. This study aimed to document the types of feed and feeding duration, as well as to describe the feeding behavior, feeding activity duration, and feeding postures of orangutans at the Jerora Forest School. The research was conducted at the Jerora Forest School, Sintang Regency, from October to November 2022. Focal animal sampling was conducted on five individual orangutans, with each individual observed for three consecutive days. A total of 30 food types were recorded, which were divided into 14 provisioned food types and 16 types of natural forage. The feeding behaviors observed included sitting, hanging, standing, lying down, and walking, with feeding positions recorded on the ground, platforms, tree branches, enclosures, and tree trunks. The mean feeding durations for each orangutan were 7 minutes for Hope, 8 minutes for Amory, 6 minutes for Dora, 5 minutes for Sinta, and 5 minutes for Oli. Individual variation in the use of natural foods and feeding substrates indicates that the forest school environment provides rehabilitant orangutans with opportunities to utilize available resources during the rehabilitation process.
