PENINGKATAN PENGETAHUAN NELAYAN TENTANG TEKNOLOGI PENANGKAPAN KEPITING BAKAU BERKELANJUTAN DI SAYOLO, SORONG SELATAN

Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla spp.) is a high-value fisheries commodity in South Sorong Regency. However, its utilization is still constrained by the use of traditional crab traps that lack selectivity and by the limited knowledge of fishers regarding sustainable fishing practices. This Community Service Program aimed to enhance the capacity of the Sayolo Fishers Group through the implementation of selective crab trap technology. The activities were conducted in May 2026 and involved five fishers using a combination of socialization, training, trap modification practice, mentoring, and evaluation through pre-tests, post-tests, observations, and interviews. The technology introduced consisted of modifying traditional crab traps by incorporating an escape gap and a biodegradable panel. The results demonstrated significant improvements in the fishers' knowledge, skills, and awareness of sustainable mud crab harvesting practices. The participants were able to independently modify their crab traps and gained a better understanding of the importance of harvesting legal-sized crabs and protecting berried female crabs. This technology has the potential to support the sustainability of mud crab resources while improving catch quality and enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities.
