Abstract

Reading ability is a fundamental skill that is essential for students and should begin to be developed from an early age, as almost all learning processes at school depend on this skill. However, at Jerol Christian Elementary School, there are still students from Grade I to Grade VI who have not yet recognized letters and are unable to read properly. This condition highlights the need to implement the peer tutoring method, a learning strategy that involves students who are proficient in reading to guide their peers who experience reading difficulties. This study aims to describe the implementation of reading instruction using the peer tutoring method, determine the improvement in students' reading abilities, and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation at Jerol Christian Elementary School. The results showed that, of the 20 students who participated in the activity, 5 students were still unable to read at all, while the other 15 students were able to spell but were not yet fluent in reading. The implementation of the peer tutoring method was found to create a more familiar, relaxed, and enjoyable learning environment for students, although its implementation still faced several challenges.
