APPLICATION OF TOTAL MIXED RATION FEED TECHNOLOGY: DAIRY GOAT PERFORMANCE AND ITS ADOPTION LEVEL AMONG SMALLHOLDER FARMERS
Abstract
This study was driven by the importance of meeting the nutritional needs of dairy goats to improve production performance, as well as the low adoption rate of feed innovations among farmers who still rely on conventional methods. Total Mixed Ration (TMR) is a feeding technology that combines all forages, protein sources, minerals, vitamins, and feed additives into a complete feed mixture formulated to meet the animals’ nutritional requirements, and is expected to reduce feed selectivity. This study aimed to: (1) determine the differences in dairy goat performance between TMR and conventional feeding, (2) develop an extension program to promote TMR adoption, and (3) assess farmers’ adoption level of TMR after the extension activity. The research was conducted in April 2025 at Jaya Farm, Brabe Village, Maron District, Probolinggo Regency, using an experimental method involving 12 dairy goats with an average body weight of 40± kg. The extension study was carried out in June 2025 using a descriptive quantitative approach involving 30 purposively selected respondents from 63 members of the Karya Makmur 2 farmer group in Wonorejo Village, Lawang District, Malang Regency. The results showed that goats fed with TMR had a palatability of 98.10%, feed intake of 3.92 kg, and milk production of 922.02 ml, while those fed conventionally had lower palatability, with a feed intake of 3.64 kg and milk production of 819.05 ml. Statistical analysis indicated a significant difference. After the extension, the adoption rate increased significantly, with the majority of respondents reaching the “Trial” stage (53.33%), demonstrating the effectiveness of the extension activity in encouraging practical TMR application.
