Abstract

This community engagement program was conducted in Payakabung Village, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, which is one of the villages fostered by Universitas Sriwijaya. The village has considerable potential for oyster mushroom cultivation; however, the resulting spent mushroom baglog waste has not been optimally utilized and may pose environmental problems. This program aimed to improve the utilization of baglog waste through training in the production of charcoal briquettes as an alternative energy source and a product with potential economic added value for the community. The program was implemented in three stages: site survey and socialization, technical training in briquette production, and the application of briquette molding technology. The pre-test results showed that all participants (100%) were familiar with baglog waste, but only 6% knew how to process it into briquettes. Following the training, 100% of participants responded positively regarding their understanding of the briquette production process, while 94% stated that they were ready to implement the introduced technology. In addition, 100% of participants stated that the training increased their knowledge and understood the economic and environmental benefits of processing baglog waste. Although production was still at a trial scale and product quality requires further improvement, the participants' enthusiasm indicates the potential for continued application of the technology in the community. This activity contributes to improving community knowledge and skills in processing baglog waste into a useful product, while supporting more sustainable resource utilization and community economic empowerment.
