Abstract

Nonformal education communities serving marginalized children generally rely on volunteer teachers without institution-owned facilities, making it difficult to bridge field-based learning experiences with conceptual representations that children can revisit. This community service activity trained volunteer teachers from the Green Moluccas Community in Ambon City to produce augmented reality-based learning media incorporating Maluku local wisdom using the Assemblr EDU platform. The training was conducted over two days with fourteen effective hours through a participatory hands-on approach; each theoretical session was followed by production practice, technical prototype testing, and the preparation of thematic lesson plans. Outcomes were measured through parallel pretests and posttests, each consisting of nine items, as well as participants’ impressions and feedback during the closing evaluation session. Eight volunteer teachers participated in the training, and seven of them completed both tests. The average number of correct answers increased from 4.7 to 7.1 out of nine items; five participants showed improvement, two participants maintained their initial scores, and none experienced a decline. The average normalized gain of 0.62, calculated from the average individual gain of six participants excluding P6, who had already achieved the maximum score in the pretest, placed the group in the moderate category approaching the high category. Errors were still found in items related to the pedagogical function of animation and the selection of local contexts for science concepts. The findings indicate that teachers’ familiarity with their own culture does not automatically ensure their ability to transform that culture into structured learning materials. Participants completed and tested AR media for eight themes, while two themes related to customary practices, sasi and Pela Gandong, remained at the prototype stage awaiting validation by traditional elders. The sustainability of the program depends on knowledge transfer among volunteers and the availability of shared devices.
