About Populis: Jurnal Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik
Populist Philosophy: Amplifying Grassroots Voices in Social and Political Knowledge
Jurnal Populis is founded upon a populist academic philosophy—an approach that emphasizes the voices and experiences of the people, especially those often excluded from dominant narratives of development and governance. This journal does not merely serve as a scholarly archive, but rather as a reflective and critical space that captures the rhythms of everyday social and political life from the ground up.
By adopting a populist lens, Populis views society not as a passive object of analysis, but as an active subject with agency, history, and insight. Through this vision, every article published is expected to contribute to the development of social and political science that is grounded, contextually relevant, and responsive to the real challenges of our time.
Historical Journey: Commitment Since 2007
Jurnal Populis began its journey in March 2007, with the publication of its first printed issue (Volume 1). Its establishment was part of a larger effort to cultivate a scholarly culture at Universitas Pattimura and to provide a space for critical academic dialogue on contemporary socio-political issues. Prior to that, the journal officially received its ISSN for print (1907-9893) on November 29, 2006, marking its formal recognition in Indonesia’s academic publishing landscape.
Since its inception, Populis has continued to publish in printed form on a regular basis, maintaining its dedication to promoting ideas that bridge local insights with broader academic discourse. Its consistency reflects a long-standing commitment to quality, openness, and sustainability in academic communication.
Digital Transformation: Expanding Reach, Embracing the Future
Responding to the digital era and the need for broader access to scholarly knowledge, Jurnal Populis launched its online publication system in 2020 through the following platform: https://ojs.unpatti.ac.id/index.php/populis/issue/archive. This portal contains open-access editions from Volume 13 to Volume 15, No. 2 (2022).
In 2023, due to improvements and upgrades in the university’s Open Journal System (OJS), the journal was migrated to a new online system, which now serves as its primary digital platform:
https://ojs3.unpatti.ac.id/index.php/populis/issue/archive, beginning with Volume 16, No. 1 (2023).
This transition represents not just a technical upgrade, but also a commitment to improving the user experience and editorial workflow for authors, reviewers, and readers alike.
Our Commitment: For Knowledge, For Society
We believe that knowledge should be inclusive, accessible, and impactful. For that reason, Jurnal Populis is committed to publishing scholarly work in both print and online formats, as a form of academic responsibility to nurture critical thought and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of society.
With a spirit of collaboration and sustainability, we welcome academics, researchers, students, and practitioners to be part of this scholarly community—working together to enrich the field of social and political sciences, both in Indonesia and globally.
