Abstract

Child sexual abuse continues to be a challenge globally and in south Africa.  There are many sources of literature that call for preventative interventions against child sexual violence. Without any form of intervention, sexual violence against children and adolescents will continue to be a problem. There is a huge need for interventions within schools to mitigate sexual violence. The aim of this study was to investigate the limitations of self defence education in South African schools as a strategy for preventing child sexual violence, with a focus on understanding its challenges, risks, and areas where additional interventions are needed to enhance child safety. Therefore, this study employed a qualitative research design and data was collected from Six purposively selected teachers aged between 30 to 65 years. Face to face semi-structured interviews was conducted for the purpose of data collection and analysed thematically. The findings indicate that self-defence programmes in schools may positively contribute to children’s confidence, personal development, awareness of their rights, and ability to protect themselves and others. However, concerns were raised regarding the possible misuse of self-defence skills, unrealistic expectations of safety, legal misunderstandings, psychological impacts, and the need for qualified instructors. Participants therefore emphasised the importance of awareness programmes, parental involvement, and school counsellors to support the safe and appropriate implementation of self-defence education.
