THE ANALYSIS OF LEXICAL RICHNESS IN SONGS IN THE DISNEY ANIMATED MOVIE MOANA

Abstract

A movie is an artistic work that reflects real-life situations, including animated movies. Moana, which was produced by Disney, is considered one of the most successful animated movies. As a musical animated movie, it developed songs to build up the narrative of the movie. This research focuses on how rich the lexical aspect of Moana’s songs is. Using three dimensions of lexical richness: diversity, sophistication, and density, as its research objectives, to explore the songs. The method of this research is qualitative research with content and corpus analysis as its main analytical tools. In measuring the three dimensions, this research used AntConc and AntWordProfiler applications. The research found that, in terms of diversity, most songs are highly diverse with a score above 0.50. While in terms of sophistication, GSL-1 was the primary corpus. The lexical density also shows that the songs tend to be meaningful rather than just artistic due to their composition of content words. The finding of this research is believed to be contributive not only to the study of linguistics but also to language learning as this research concludes that the songs in Moana are linguistically rich and also considerably easy to understand.
