Diversity of Pteridophytes Along Riverbanks in Tiganderket District, Karo Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract

The terrestrial ecosystem along the former cold lava flow channel in Tiganderket District, Karo Regency, plays a vital ecological role; however, research on Pteridophyte diversity in this area remains limited. Pteridophytes are recognized as key components of the post-eruption ecological succession of terrestrial vegetation. This study aimed to analyze Pteridophyte diversity along the former cold lava flow channel in Tiganderket District using the transect method across three locations (upstream, midstream, and downstream), alongside analyses of diversity (Shannon-Wiener index), dominance (Simpson index), and PCA. The study identified 16 species across 7 families, revealing a moderate level of diversity (H’ = 2.16–2.36) and low dominance (C = 0.11–0.14), with the community positively influenced by ambient temperature (26°C–34°C). In conclusion, the Pteridophyte community structure in the area is relatively stable, implying that the post-eruption ecosystem recovery or ecological succession process are proceeding effectively and in a balanced manner.
