Abstract

Surface wave ripple disturbance is a major obstacle in enjoying the potential of underwater tourism in coastal ecotourism areas. This study aims to develop a visual aid that can neutralize the wave ripple, in order to improve the quality of the tourist experience at Namanalu Beach. This development research adopts the Design Thinking methodology conducted in July-September 2025. Data at the Empathize, Define, Ideate and Test stages were obtained through interviews and discussions and joint applications with users at the Namanalu Beach tourist location, analyzed using Thematic Analysis; the Prototype stage was carried out at the Hydrostatics and Towing Tank Laboratory, Faculty of Engineering, Pattimura University. The study produced two prototypes of panoramic boxes equipped with an innovative mechanism in the form of a ballast system to regulate the buoyancy of the tool, making it easier for users to immerse the bottom of the box below the water surface and retrieval (lifting) it back. Based on the results of functional tests in the field, both panoramic box prototypes were proven to operate optimally. This tool successfully eliminates visual distortion due to wave ripples, so that underwater views can be observed clearly and proportionally. It was concluded that this panorama box not only addresses the identified issues but also has the potential to be an effective conservation education tool, especially for older tourists, children, and non-swimmers. Implementation of this tool is recommended to support sustainable ecotourism activities.
