BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications, is a scientific journal that was first published by the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Pattimura University (link of website) in Collaboration with The Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) (link of website). The first Publication in the printed version, based on the Decree of LIPI No. 0004.06/JI.3.02/SK.ISSN/2007.10 on 3^rd October 2007. BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications has been registered with ISSN: 1978-7227 (Print) start from Volume 1 issue 1, 2007. On February 14th 2019, Editor in Chief of BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications signed a collaboration with The Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS)  in the context of improving and developing journal management as well as improving the quality of publications. In addition, the collaboration between BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications and Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) aims to utilize human resources and networks owned by both institutions. 

“Barekeng” is a term from Maluku which means "counting". The number of authors' interest in publishing articles in BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications, has greatly increased every year starting from 2007 to 2018 (2 issues published with 8 articles per issue), 2019 (3 issues published with 8 articles per issue), 2020 (4 issues published with 15 articles per issue), 2021 (4 issues published with 20 articles per issue), 2022 (4 issues published with 40 articles per issue). BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications is published in March, June, September, and December.

This journal was created and initiative by a lecturer in Mathematics Department named Gysber Jan Tamaela, S.Si., M.Si., in 2007. He was also the first Chairman (editor in chief) of Barekeng's journal since 2007-2010. In its development, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications then began published in online version in 2013, in order to comply with regulations related to scientific journals must be searchable online. BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications was online first time on 2013 in Pattimura University repository, that available on the Website link: https://ejournal.unpatti.ac.id/ppr_barekeng.php?jrnl_nm=Barekeng, this is also aim to introduce or disseminate the publication of BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications articles more broadly to the wide world.

According to the development of scientific publication media, and changes to new regulations related to the management of scientific journals, every scientific journal is required to have a journal-specific website, so it was easily for accessed and managed (indexed and cited). BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications was migrated to use Open Journal System (OJS), through the Workshop "Management of Scientific Journal based on OJS" organized by Mathematics Department, Pattimura University in January 2017. At the beginning, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications available in OJS2, but due to the development of the OJS system, then BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications was migrated from OJS2 to OJS3 since January 2018. Officially, the BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications start to use OJS3 in Volume 12 Issue 1, March 2018,  available on website: https://ojs3.unpatti.ac.id/index.php/barekeng/, with e-ISSN: 2615-3017 and have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number for each article and each issue published, with the Prefix Unpatti Number: 10.30598 (link to Crossref DOI).

Based on the LIPI Decree No. 0005.26153017/JI.3.1/SK.ISSN/2018.02 on 15^th February 2018, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications, has been registered with ISSN 2615-3017 (Online) starting for articles in Volume 12 issue 1 March 2018.

The focus or scope of the BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications as a scientific publications covering the following fields: Pure Mathematics (Analysis, Algebra & Number Theory), Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Control and Optimization, Discrete Mathematics & Combinatorics, Modeling & Simulation, Physics Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Logic, Geometry & Topology, Ethno-mathematics, Mathematics Education and Computer Mathematics.

In August 2018, the BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications apply for the accreditation process to the ARJUNA, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher education, Republic of Indonesia. BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications, was first designated as an Accredited Scientific Journal with category "SINTA 3" (Level 3) from March 2017 to December 2021, based on the Decree of the Dirjen Penguatan Riset dan Pengembangan, Kementerian Riset, Teknologi dan Pendidikan Tinggi, Republic of Indonesia, No. 34/E/KPT/2018, concerning to Scientific Journal Accreditation Ranking in Period III 2018. The second accreditation in 2019 based on Scientific Journal Accreditation Ranking No.: 28/E/KPT/2019. However, in second accreditation process BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications still in SINTA 3 (Level 3) of Indonesia scientific journal ranking start from March 2019 to December 2023. Then the third accreditation process in 2020, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications has been accredited at SINTA 2 (Level 2) by Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Republic of Indonesia based on the Decree Number: 158/E/KPT/2021, start from June 2020 to June 2025.

The number of authors' interest in publishing articles in BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications), has greatly increased every year according to the data of number of issue and number of article have been published, like the following:
1. Starting from 2007 to 2018 (2 issues published with 8 articles per issue),
2. In 2019 (3 issues published with 8 articles per issue),
3. In 2020 (4 issues published with 15 articles per issue),
4. In 2021 (4 issues published with 20 articles per issue),
5. In 2022 (4 issues published with 40 articles per issue),
6. In 2023 (4 issues published with 60 articles per issue). 
BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications), is published 4 (four) times a year in March, June, September, and December.

Start from 2022 BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan has process the journal title in english in Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), the name is "BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications". And also, BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications), has change the publisher from Mathematics Department Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Pattimura University to only Pattimura University. It is because, the BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications) want to move from National Journal to International Journal and also to improve the menagement in Journal.
