BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications, is a scientific journal that was first published by the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Pattimura University (website link) in Collaboration with The Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) (website link). The first publication is a printed version, based on the Decree of LIPI Number 0004.06/JI.3.02/SK.ISSN/2007.10 on 3^rd October 2007. 
BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications has been registered with ISSN: 1978-7227 (Print) starting from volume 1 issue 1, 2007. On February 14th, 2019, the editor-in-chief of BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications signed a collaboration with The Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) to improve and develop journal management and improve the quality of publications. In addition, the collaboration between BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications and the Indonesian Mathematical Society (IndoMS) aims to utilize human resources and networks owned by both institutions. 
“Barekeng” is a term from Maluku which means "counting".
The interest of authors to publish articles in BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications continues to greatly increase with each passing year. Therefore, the number of articles increases as follows:

1. Starting from 2007 to 2018, 2 issues are published each year (8 articles per issue)
2. In 2019, 3 issues are published (8 articles per issue),
3. In 2020, 4 issues are published (15 articles per issue),
4. In 2021, 4 issues are published (20 articles per issue),
5. In 2022, 4 issues are published (40 articles per issue),
6. Starting from 2023, 4 issues are published each year (60 articles per issue).

BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications is published 4 (four) times in a year, namely in March, June, September, and December. 
This journal was created in 2007 as an initiative by a lecturer in Mathematics Department of Pattimura University named Gysber Jan Tamaela, S.Si., M.Si. He was also the first Chairman (editor-in-chief) of Barekeng's journal from 2007-2010. In its development, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications then began publishing an online version in 2013, in order to comply with regulations regarding scientific journals must be searchable online. BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications was online for the first time in 2013 in Pattimura University repository, being available on the Website link: https://ejournal.unpatti.ac.id/ppr_barekeng.php?jrnl_nm=Barekeng, this breakthrough aims to introduce the publication of BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications articles worldwide. 
According to the development of scientific publication media, and changes to new regulations regarding the management of scientific journals, every scientific journal is required to have a journal-specific website, so it can be easily accessed and managed (indexed and cited). BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications migrated to the Open Journal System (OJS), through the Workshop titled "Management of Scientific Journal based on OJS" organized by the Mathematics Department, Pattimura University in January 2017. 
In the beginning, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications was available in OJS2, due to the development of the OJS system, then BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications was migrated from OJS2 to OJS3 on January 2018. Officially, the BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications start using OJS3 in volume 12 Issue 1, March 2018,  available on website: https://ojs3.unpatti.ac.id/index.php/barekeng/, with e-ISSN: 2615-3017 and have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number for each article and each issue published, with the Prefix Unpatti Number: 10.30598 (link to Crossref DOI). 
Based on the LIPI Decree Number 0005.26153017/JI.3.1/SK.ISSN/2018.02 on 15^th February 2018, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications, has been registered with ISSN 2615-3017 (Online) starting for articles in volume 12 issue 1 March 2018. 
The focus or scope of the BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications as a scientific publications covering the following fields: Pure Mathematics (Analysis, Algebra & Number Theory), Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Control and Optimization, Discrete Mathematics & Combinatorics, Modeling & Simulation, Physics Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Logic, Geometry & Topology, Ethno-mathematics, and Computer Mathematics. 
In August 2018, the BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications officially obtained National Accreditation at the third-highest level (SINTA 3) of Indonesia scientific journal ranking from the Indonesian Government through the Decree of Dirjen Penguatan Riset dan Pengembangan, Kementerian Riset, Teknologi dan Pendidikan Tinggi Republik Indonesia, Period III Scientific Journal Accreditation Ranking in 2018, Number 34/E/KPT/2018, starting from March 2017 to December 2021. Then, in 2019 BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications) proposed and submit for re-accreditation and was accredited for the second period, still at the third-highest level (SINTA 3) of Indonesia scientific journal ranking, through the Decree of Dirjen Penguatan Riset dan Pengembangan, Kementerian Riset, Teknologi dan Pendidikan Tinggi Republik Indonesia, Period V Scientific Journal Accreditation Ranking in 2019, Number 28/E/KPT/2019, starting from March 2019 to December 2023.  
Then, on December 2021, BAREKENG: Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications) was accredited at the second-highest level (SINTA 2) of Indonesia scientific journal ranking, through the Decree of Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi, Riset dan Teknologi Republik Indonesia, Number 158/E/KPT/2021, starting from June 2020 to June 2025. 
Starting from 2022 BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan has registered for a title in English to Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) Indonesia, with the English name of "BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications". Moreover, BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications), has changed publisher from the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Pattimura University to only Pattimura University. This is because BAREKENG : Jurnal Ilmu Matematika dan Terapan (BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications) aims to develop and become an International Journal and to improve the management system in the Journal. 
BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications has been currently indexed by both national and international indexer institutions such as: Google Scholar, SINTA 2, GARUDA Kemenristekdikti, Crossref DOI, Index Copernicus, BASE, One Search, PKP Index, Moraref, CiteFactor, e-Journals, One Repo, Neliti, Dimensions, Indonesian Scientific Journal Database (ISJD), and Eurasian Scientific Journal Index (ESJI ), Scilit, Science gate, and Publons. Moreover, on 7th December 2024, BAREKENG : Journal of Mathematics and Its Applications has been successfully accepted for Scopus indexing on:, with tracking number: 844B555EB70B0478.
